Chapter 12

“We must go on the Haunted Tunnel ride, Alonso,” Britney said with unbridled excitement. Her soft brown-gray eyes lit up with joy.

“We must?” He arched a brow.

“Yeah, of course,” she said, giving him the you-must-be-kidding-by-not-thinking-of-going-on-the-ride-of-the-century look. “Anyone who’s anyone goes on the Haunted Tunnel ride. It’s the best ride here.”

“I’m sure it is. But are you sure you can handle it?” he asked, amusement in his tone.

She rolled her eyes and placed and her hands on her curvaceous hips, before uttering: “I think I can take it, Alonso. I’m not afraid of anything.”

“Good.”

“That is, I won’t be afraid if I’m with you.”

He grinned. “Honesty at last.”

The whole environment at the fair was striking. It was hard not to want to enjoy yourself. The sound system at the fair blazed popular songs over the speakers with heavy bass. At the moment, the old tune by Shanice I Love Your Smile was playing. How appropriate. Her smile was beginning to rub off on him. How was he going to resist her charm?

“I’ll go—only because you need me with you,” he added.

She rolled her eyes again and grinned. As they walked closer to the Haunted Tunnel with the line up of people, he pulled out his wallet to pay for the tickets.

He wanted to discuss about the latest findings of her case, but he figured it could wait.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away, he recited the famous quote in his mind.

Wasn’t that was life was about?

Yet, it took the young miss Britney to help him to rekindle something he didn’t realize he’d lost a long time ago.

She was right. He’d been quite a dud—not that she’d told him that. All work and no play made for a terrible way to live.

He’d spent most of his adult life caring for people who were vulnerable, all the while dating infrequently and breaking it off before anything ever got serious with whichever woman he’d been dating.

“You ready?” he said, turning to her as they sat in the carriage of the train before chugging into the tunnel.

“Sure,” she said casually. “Nothing to it.”

He smirked. Sure, we’ll see.

As the train carriage moved slowly into the tunnel, the darkness fell over them. Alonso grinned and rolled his eyes as Britney cuddled beside him. Yeah, sure, you’re not afraid.

Nothing could be seen around them, so it sure was eerie. Alonso actually thought it was pretty cool. He could feel Britney’s fingers digging into his bicep as the strange sounds came over the speakers inside the tunnel.

Then the train picked up speed. After a while, as expected, creepy objects and figurines started to pop up around them. Just then, something reached over and touched Britney’s shoulder. Her shrill scream pierced the air, and Britney clung to him more desperately. The culprit was a piece of fabric from one of the mannequins in the dark tunnel.

Britney snuggled into him, her arms squeezed around his abs. And man, did his groin stiffen.
